Profer ("Company," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our platform at myprofer.com, our mobile applications, and all related services (collectively, the "Platform").

By using the Platform, you consent to the data practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the practices described herein, please do not use the Platform.

2. Information We Collect

Personal Information You Provide

When you create an account, apply as a professor or student, enroll in courses, or contact us, we may collect the following information:

  • Full name, email address, phone number, and mailing address
  • Date of birth and proof of age (when applicable)
  • Academic credentials, transcripts, CVs, and professional references (professors)
  • Educational history and enrollment records (students)
  • Payment information (processed securely through Stripe)
  • Profile photographs and biographical information
  • Communications you send to us or through the Platform

Information Collected Automatically

When you access the Platform, we may automatically collect certain information, including:

  • Device type, operating system, and browser type
  • IP address and approximate geographic location
  • Pages visited, links clicked, and time spent on the Platform
  • Referring URLs and search terms used to find the Platform
  • Course engagement data, including attendance and assignment submissions

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To create and manage your account and verify your identity
  • To process course enrollments, payments, and refunds
  • To vet and credential professors applying to the Platform
  • To facilitate communication between professors and students
  • To generate academic records, transcripts, and grade reports

4. Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We may share your information in the following limited circumstances:

  • With Professors and Students: Names and relevant academic information are shared between enrolled students and their professors to facilitate course delivery.
  • With Service Providers: We share information with trusted third-party service providers who assist us in operating the Platform (see Section 7: Third-Party Services).
  • For Legal Compliance: We may disclose information when required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of our assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

5. Data Security

We implement commercially reasonable technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. These measures include encryption of data in transit and at rest, access controls, and regular security audits.

However, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials.

7. Third-Party Services

We integrate with the following third-party services to operate the Platform. Each service has its own privacy policy governing the use of your data:

Zoom Video Communications

Live course sessions are delivered via Zoom. When you join a Zoom session, Zoom may collect information such as your name, email address, device information, and meeting participation data in accordance with Zoom's privacy policy.

Stripe

Payment processing is handled by Stripe. Profer does not store your full credit card number or banking details. Stripe processes and stores payment information in compliance with PCI-DSS standards and its own privacy policy.

Supabase

Our backend infrastructure is powered by Supabase, which provides authentication, database, and storage services. Your data is stored securely on Supabase's infrastructure with encryption at rest and in transit.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, including:

  • Right to Access: You may request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Right to Correction: You may request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information.
  • Right to Deletion: You may request the deletion of your personal information, subject to certain legal and contractual exceptions (e.g., academic records that must be retained).
  • Right to Data Portability: You may request a portable copy of your data in a structured, commonly used format.
  • Right to Opt Out: You may opt out of non-essential communications and certain data processing activities.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at the address provided in Section 11. We will respond to your request within thirty (30) days or as required by applicable law.

9. Children's Privacy

The Platform is not directed to children under the age of sixteen (16). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 16 without verified parental consent, we will take steps to delete that information promptly.

Users between the ages of sixteen (16) and eighteen (18) may use the Platform with verified parental or guardian consent. Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided personal information to Profer without consent should contact us immediately.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page and notify you by email or through a prominent notice on the Platform.

Your continued use of the Platform after the revised Privacy Policy is posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated practices. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
